What Portage is

Portage is an independent AI-powered study tool for the Canadian citizenship test. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) or the Government of Canada.

Our study material is built around the official "Discover Canada" guide — a publicly available government document. Practising on Portage does not guarantee passing the official citizenship test. Any readiness estimate shown in the app is an internal practice metric and is not a prediction of the result on test day.

Eligibility

You must be at least 18 years old to use Portage. The Canadian citizenship test is required only for applicants aged 18 to 54, so the service is designed for adult users. By creating an account, you confirm that you meet this age requirement and that the information you provide is accurate.

Your account

You are responsible for keeping your password and account credentials confidential and for all activity that occurs under your account. If you suspect unauthorised access — including unexpected charges, login alerts from unfamiliar locations, or password resets you did not request — notify us immediately at hello@portageprep.ca so we can help you secure the account.

Portage accounts are for individual use only. You may not share your login, transfer your account, or let multiple people study under the same account. We may suspend or terminate accounts that show clear signs of credential sharing — for example, when an account is plainly being used by multiple people at the same time — with no refund of any fees paid.

Free tier

The Free tier gives you 30 practice questions per calendar month, across 4 core topic areas, with AI explanations on every wrong answer. The monthly counter resets on the first day of each calendar month (UTC).

Some features are reserved for paid plans, including: access to all 18 topic areas, unlimited practice questions, the timed full-length practice test, advanced study planning, and the AI study assistant. You can use the Free tier indefinitely without ever upgrading. The Free tier offering — including the monthly question quota and the set of free topics — may be adjusted from time to time under the change-of-service notice provisions in §12 (Changes to the service).

No refunds

All paid plan fees are final and non-refundable. This includes — without limitation — fees paid for periods you did not use, periods that overlap with a cancellation, accidental subscriptions, forgotten subscriptions, plan changes, account closure, or any other reason.

If you cancel a paid plan, paid access continues through the end of the current billing period and is not refunded on a partial-period basis. Where applicable consumer-protection law in your province or territory grants you a non-waivable right to a refund, that statutory right applies to the minimum extent required by law; this section does not override it.

We recommend trying the Free tier first to decide whether Portage fits your study style before subscribing.

Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • Create multiple accounts to circumvent free-tier limits or paid plan billing.
  • Share your account with anyone else, or use any account that does not belong to you.
  • Scrape, copy, redistribute, republish, or commercially exploit Portage's questions, explanations, study guides, or any other content.
  • Use bots, scripts, or automated tools to interact with the service.
  • Attempt to reverse-engineer, extract training data from, probe, fuzz, or otherwise interfere with the AI system or its internal configuration.
  • Attempt to use the AI study assistant during a timed practice test, or otherwise use Portage features to look up answers while a timed test is in progress.
  • Attempt to bypass paywalls, rate limits, or authentication.
  • Impersonate any person or entity, or misrepresent your affiliation with anyone.
  • Use Portage for any unlawful purpose or in a way that violates applicable law.

Violations may result in immediate suspension or termination of your account, with no refund of any fees paid.

AI-generated content

Questions, explanations, and study summaries on Portage are generated or processed by artificial intelligence. They are written to align with the official "Discover Canada" guide, but they may occasionally contain errors, omissions, or outdated information.

You are responsible for verifying important facts against the official guide and the current IRCC website at canada.ca before relying on them for any real-world decision (including the citizenship test itself, your application, or any legal or immigration matter). Portage makes no warranty that AI-generated content is error-free, complete, or current, and is not liable for any decisions made based on it.

Beta and experimental features

From time to time we may release features marked "beta", "experimental", "preview", or similar. These features are provided as is, may not work correctly, and may be modified, suspended, or removed at any time without notice. The No warranty and Limitation of liability sections apply with particular force to beta features.

User content

When you submit feedback, bug reports, or suggestions, you grant Portage a non-exclusive, royalty-free, perpetual licence to use that content to improve the service. You retain ownership of your feedback. We will not publicly attribute it to you without your permission.

Your quiz answers and personal progress data belong to you. We use them only to operate the service as described in the Privacy Policy.

Intellectual property

The Portage platform — its design, brand, software, original written content, and the curated question bank — is owned by or licensed to Portage. The "Discover Canada" document is © Government of Canada and is referenced for educational purposes under the Open Government Licence – Canada.

No content from Portage may be copied, redistributed, or used to train another model without our prior written consent.

Changes to the service

Portage is an evolving product. We may add, modify, suspend, deprecate, or discontinue any feature, content area, language, or plan tier at any time. If a change materially reduces the value of a paid plan you are currently subscribed to, we will provide at least 14 days' notice by email or in-app notice; you may cancel before the change takes effect. We are not obligated to maintain any specific feature, content area, or content set indefinitely.

No warranty

Portage is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranty of any kind, express or implied — including any warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or non-infringement. We do not warrant that the service will be uninterrupted, secure, or error-free, or that any defect will be corrected.

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Portage, its operator, and anyone working on Portage's behalf will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, punitive, exemplary, or consequential damages arising from or related to your use of the service. This includes — without limitation — failure to pass the citizenship test, an unsuccessful citizenship application, loss of data, loss of profits, loss of business, or any reliance you place on AI-generated content.

Our total cumulative liability to you for any and all claims relating to the service is limited to the greater of (a) the amount you actually paid to Portage in the 12 months immediately preceding the event giving rise to the claim, or (b) CAD $50.

Some jurisdictions do not permit the exclusion of certain warranties or the limitation of certain liabilities. In those jurisdictions, our liability is limited to the maximum extent permitted by applicable law and nothing in these Terms removes a statutory right that cannot be waived.

Indemnification

You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless Portage, its operator, and anyone working on Portage's behalf from and against any third-party claim, demand, loss, or expense — including reasonable legal fees — arising from or related to (a) your breach of these Terms, (b) your violation of any applicable law, or (c) your infringement of any third party's rights through your use of the service or the content you submit. This obligation survives termination of your account.

Force majeure

We are not liable for any delay or failure in performance arising from circumstances outside our reasonable control. These include — without limitation — acts of God, natural disasters, war, civil disturbance, government action, labour disputes, internet or telecommunications failures, denial-of-service attacks, and outages of any third-party service we rely on (including the payment processor, AI provider, and hosting and infrastructure providers).

Account termination

You can delete your account at any time from the Settings page. Account deletion follows the data-retention process described in the Privacy Policy.

We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms, with or without notice. Upon termination, your right to use the service ends immediately. The sections covering No refunds, Acceptable use (IP and scraping prohibitions), AI-generated content, User content, Intellectual property, No warranty, Limitation of liability, Indemnification, Governing law, and General survive termination.

Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of Canada and the province of British Columbia, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. Any disputes will be resolved exclusively in the courts of British Columbia.

To the extent permitted by applicable law, disputes will be resolved on an individual basis and not as part of a class, consolidated, or representative proceeding. Nothing in this Section limits any right to participate in a class proceeding that cannot be waived under applicable Canadian consumer-protection law.

If you are a consumer resident in a province or territory whose consumer-protection laws apply on a mandatory basis, those laws apply to the extent they grant you greater protection than these Terms — including, where applicable, the British Columbia Business Practices and Consumer Protection Act.

Notices

We will send official notices about these Terms or your account — including changes to the Terms, billing notices, and security alerts — to the email address on file for your account, or by in-app notice. You are responsible for keeping that email address current. Notices are deemed received on the day they are sent.

You may give us official notice by emailing hello@portageprep.ca.

General

Assignment. We may assign or transfer these Terms, in whole or in part, to a successor entity (for example, in connection with an acquisition or corporate reorganisation) without your individual consent. You may not assign these Terms or your account.

Language. Portage provides these Terms in English and in French. In the event of any conflict between the two versions, the English version governs — except for Quebec-resident consumers, for whom the French version is provided and governs, as required by Quebec's Charter of the French Language and the Consumer Protection Act.

Entire agreement and severability. These Terms, together with the Privacy Policy, form the entire agreement between you and Portage regarding the service and supersede all prior agreements and understandings. If any provision is found to be invalid or unenforceable, it will be modified to the minimum extent necessary to be enforceable, and the remaining provisions will continue in full force and effect.

No waiver. Our failure to enforce any provision of these Terms is not a waiver of our right to enforce it later.

Changes to these terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. Material changes will be communicated by email or in-app notice at least 14 days before they take effect. If you continue to use Portage after that date, you accept the updated Terms. If you do not accept them, you must stop using Portage and may delete your account.
